Abstract

Introduction: While cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has demonstrated efficacy across multiple therapeutic contexts—including individual, couples, and family therapy-its potential impact on physical activity engagement among older women remains underexplored. This study aims to address this gap by investigating the effects of CBT on older women’s exercise intentions, perceived stress levels, and psychological resilience.
Methods: This study utilized a quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test assessments, including a control group. The research focused on women aged 65 and older in Golestan province, Iran, in 2024. Using convenience sampling, 40 participants were recruited and randomly assigned to either the intervention or control group  (n=20 for each group). Standardized questionnaires were employed to assess the variables. The intervention group underwent an eight-session cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) program. Data were analyzed using paired and independent t-tests in SPSS version 27.
Results: The results demonstrated a significant increase in exercise intention among intervention group participants after completing the CBT program. Additionally, the intervention group exhibited a reduction in perceived stress levels and a notable improvement in resilience compared to the control group.
Conclusion: CBT has demonstrated efficacy in reducing stress, enhancing resilience, and increasing exercise intention among older women. Given these benefits, integrating CBT into physical rehabilitation programs could significantly improve both psychological well-being and physical health outcomes in this population
